Communication and Coordination Specialist

Position Overview:

Northern Social-Environmental Research (NorthernSER) is seeking a Communication and Coordination Specialist (CCS) to join our team. The CCS will communicate and coordinate with Alaska Native peoples, scientists, government agencies, and other relevant organizations to share information, solicit feedback, foster partnerships, support interdisciplinary teamwork, and facilitate the timely completion of high-quality deliverables.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Community outreach and engagement
    • Align outreach and engagement efforts with community and project goals.
    • Lead outreach campaigns and maintain the company’s web presence.
    • Create and edit communication materials (reports, newsletters, flyers, summaries, and social media content).
    • Develop and maintain outreach and communications databases, including key local contacts and meeting schedules.
    • Manage correspondence with local administrators and coordinate project representation at local meetings (e.g. Tribal Council, City Council, etc.).
    • Plan and facilitate in-person and virtual events such as community meetings, and information sessions.
    • Ensure project team accountability and responsiveness to community feedback and information requests.
  2. Project coordination
    • Support project research, planning, and logistics.
    • Prepare meeting agendas, take minutes, and track action items.
    • Coordinate project activities to meet timelines and milestones.
    • Report progress on deliverables and ensure team accountability.
    • Facilitate intra- and inter-team collaboration with team members and external project partners.
    • Identify potential challenges and work proactively with team members to resolve them.
    • Support project outreach, compliance, and documentation such as letters of support and MOUs with Tribes and other local entities.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Alaska Indigenous communities, traditions, and ways of communicating.
  • Established connections and experience working with Indigenous communities in Alaska.
  • Understanding of Indigenous knowledge, conventional science, and co-production of knowledge.
  • Ability to synthesize and organize information for public communication purposes.
  • Strong project management, facilitation, and organizational skills to facilitate tracking and dissemination of information.
  • Digital literacy and advanced research skills, including the ability to identify and cite credible sources.
  • Ability to write clearly and review your own work for quality, completeness, and adherence to procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office apps (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.).
  • Effective use of social media for professional communication.
  • Excellent time management and multitasking abilities.
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving and process improvement.
  • Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Experience with event planning and coordination.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Expertise in qualitative research methods including semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and qualitative analysis.
  • Graphic design skills, including high proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Web design skills, including proficiency in WordPress.

Education and Experience

Master’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience, or bachelor’s degree with 10+ years experience. Relevant fields include communications, public relations, Indigenous studies, social science, science policy, management, and other related disciplines.

Additional Information

This is a one-year position, with expectation of renewal pending funding.
