Data gaps are barriers to increased understanding of climate change impacts on Alaskan sub-populations.

When we hear about climate change in Alaska, we don’t hear much about its effects on APIDA and Black residents, already underrepresented groups. While minority communities across the U.S. experience disproportionate impacts from climate change (air quality, property damage, utility expenses, etc.), we don’t know if similar differences are also present in Alaska due to large data gaps.

Approach

Community-Based Research (CBR), survey, and focus group

NorthernSER’s community-based research approach engages community members as both participants and collaborators to share knowledge and address questions that are relevant to societal concerns.

Outcome

Research yielded a comprehensive and accessible community report that synthesizes data from original and secondary sources and provides recommendations to advance representative and inclusive research priorities.
